Distinguished Texan Award
Grant Teaff: Teaff served as head coach at McMurry College (1960-65) and Angelo State University (1969-71) prior to his 21-year career at Baylor. Immediately following his retirement in 1992, Teaff became executive director of the American Football Coaches Association, a position he still holds today. He has served on the NFF Board of Directors, was named vice-chair of an NCAA committee investigating gambling on college campuses and created the American Football Coaches Foundation (AFCF). During his 30-years as a head coach, Teaff tallied a 170-151-8 record, claiming two Southwest Conference Championships with Baylor and leading them to eight bowl games. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2006, Teaff was awarded the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award at the AFCA Convention in Dallas.
Legends Award
Neal Wilson: The long-time Lewisville coach and athletics director who passed away, will posthumously claim the group’s Legends Award for his local contributions to the game. Wilson began his career as a junior high coach in Lewisville in 1965 and after a few other coaching stints, returned in 1978 as the head coach at Lewisville High School. In 1983, he accepted the job as athletics director while continuing to coach until 1986. He is an inductee of both the Texas High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Honor and the Texas High School Athletics Director’s Association Hall of Honor
Steve Storie Official of the Year
Matt Loeffler: Loeffler is the former president of Dallas Football Officials Association and has officiated high school and college football in the region for nearly 30 years.
Athletics Director of the Year
Homer B. Johnson (Garland ISD): Johnson, who began his career at Garland as an assistant coach in 1948, is currently in his 61st year of service. He became athletics director in 1963 after five years as head coach at Garland High School
Large High School Coach of the Year
Tom Westerberg (Allen): Led the Eagles to their first 5A Division I state championship. Westerberg, who has been at Allen for five years, has spent 22 years coaching Texas high school football, including a stint as offensive coordinator on the 1999 Garland state championship team.
Large High School Assistant Coach of the Year
Steve Thomas (Plano Senior): Thomas currently coaches the offensive line, defensive tackles and special teams for the Wildcats who advanced to the second round of the 2008 5A Division I playoffs.
Small High School Coach of the Year
Kent Scott (Prosper): Scott led the Eagles to the 2008 3A Division I State Championship in his third season as head coach
Small High School Assistant Coach of the Year
Bill Elliot (Celina): Elliot currently serves as offensive coordinator for the 2008 3A Division II State Runner-Up.
2009 Collegiate Scholar-Athletes
Mitch Enright (SMU): After being named to the Rimington Watch List last season, Enright injured his hand and was limited to three games. A three-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection, Enright started all 12 games at center as a sophomore. He is a three time winner of the Conference USA Academic Medal and member of the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Enright is currently pursuing an MBA from SMU’s prestigious Cox School of Business after earning an undergraduate degree in management in just three years.
Shae Reagan (TCU): Reagan was a 2008 Draddy Trophy semifinalist, the NFF’s national award recognizing a player for his academic, athletic and community accomplishments in college. Reagan was a first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection and a recipient of the TCU football team's G. Malcolm Louden Academic Achievement Award. His 18.56 yards per catch average places him sixth on the all-time TCU list. He finished his career with 32 receptions for 594 yards as the Frogs finished 11-2 and ranked seventh in the final AP Poll.
Casey Fitzgerald (UNT): A two-time First Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection at wide receiver, Fitzgerald also excelled in the classroom as he was a constant fixture on both the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and the Dean’s List. Fitzgerald finished his career with the most receptions in Sun Belt Conference and North Texas history. He was a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the nation’s top receiver, and a 2007 All-America honorable mention by SI.com.
Daniel Polk (Midwestern State): Has earned top scholar-athlete honors among players from the region’s Division II schools. A four-time all-conference selection, Polk twice received national player of the week honors en route to being named a First-Team All America as a senior. The quarterback graduated as MSU’s all-time leader in rushing yards and total offense. Off the field he participated in Feed a Family for Christmas and Thanksgiving and served as a coordinator for the Martin Luther King Jr. Highway clean up. He will earn a bachelors of science in respiratory care in May 2009.
Doug Carlton (ETBU): Carlton will accept honors as the best from the region’s Division III schools. Selected as a First-Team All Conference player in 2008, he was four-time Academic All-Conference selection. In 2008, he claimed the M.L. Dubach Award and scholarship for academic excellence, character, leadership and athletic accomplishment at ETBU. He has also received a University of North Texas $100,000 Masters Fellowship.
